While the percentage changes for the non-white races appear to be very substantial (see chart at left), these are from relatively small bases (at least compared to the white race). The overall percentage distribution change over time-shown below- demonstrates more clearly the impact of the growth of the non-white races.

NOTE ON HISPANIC ORIGIN

The U.S. Census Bureau adheres to federal standards for collecting and presenting data on race and Hispanic (or Latino) origin. Race and Hispanic origin are two separate and distinct concepts; a Hispanic can be of any race. The Census collection has been evolving over the past several censuses, and caution is advised when comparing data over time since different phrasing and placement of questions can affect responses.
The following represents th
e Hispanic population in Allen County:

Note that the number of respondents indicating Hispanic origin with race equal to "Some Other Race" is almost equal to the total number of respondents in Allen County using the "Some Other Race Alone" category; therefore, interpreting "Some Other Race Alone" would be equivalent to viewing this as a Hispanic response, but keep in mind that over half of the Hispanics are in other racial groups.

1) The 1970 Census was the first census to include a separate question on Hispanic origin, but it was only asked in a sample of 5% of all households.
