1) Natural Increase is the difference between births and deaths.
2) International immigration is the result of legal immigration, net undocumented immigration, emigration, and net movement between Puerto Rico and United States.
3) Internal Migration is the population coming into the county from within the United State or exiting the county to live elsewhere in the United States.
4) Since these population estimates are based on a mathematical model, there is a "residual amount" which is allocated by IBRC among the counties.

Natural Increase: Allen County's estimated increase of 10,901 in population from natural increase in the period following the 2000 Census to July 1, 2004 is the second highest number of all the Indiana counties, second only to Marion County. Hamilton County is third, and Lake County, which is the second largest county in population in Indiana, is fourth.
Note that the number of births (and deaths) used in this population estimate is not equal to the actual births recorded for this period. Read more about the methodology used by IBRC-see link in Caveat Box below.

Also note that the Census Population Estimates are different from the Census's American Community Survey. (what's this
>>>-see source page) For example, the ACS's estimate of Allen County's population on July 1, 2005 was 338,279--a 5,727 count difference.

Migration: Migration has been the more volatile component of the population estimates. There are two components to immigration: internal migration-people within the United States moving into or out of a region, and international migration which is the sum of legal immigration from abroad; net undocumented immigration from abroad; emigration; and net movement between Puerto Rico and the U.S. mainland. Indiana experienced net out-migration in the 1970s and 1980s, but an inflow in the 1990s. Recent IRS data indicates that Indiana is once again experiencing net out-migration, and the estimate for Allen County for internal migration is negative.

The Population Estimates have continued to rank Allen County
poorly in terms of net migration. Allen County was 4th worst in total cumulative net migration loss since April 1, 2000 (rank was 89th of all counties in net migration). Only Marion, St. Joseph, Lake, and Vigo counties had estimated outflows greater than Allen.

1) The January 1,2006 annexation of most of the Aboite area is not shown -this will appear in the Census Estimates in the July, 2006 Estimates, which will be released in August, 2007.
The population of this area of Aboite as of the 2000 Census was 25,094 (source: News-Sentinel 12/5/05).
2) Annexations have caused the base for these cities and towns to be adjusted.
3) Zanesville is in both Allen and Wells Counties, and no attempt has been made to allocate the population to either county. This is the total population of Zanesville.
