This is individual return data, not household data. This income tax data cannot be compared with the Census data on median household incomes since this tax data is not household data. The data above could represent individual members of a household filing separately. In 2004, there were 155,222 total returns in Allen County. The ACS estimated the number of households to be 132,660. Households can file more than one income tax return, for example, teenagers with a summer or part-time job, non-married adults sharing a residence, etc. are examples that could account for the number of returns.
The percentage of each income group in Allen County is very similar to the composition of each bracket for the State of Indiana. This represents a change over the last 4 years, when Allen County had about 2 percent fewer of its filers in the "$30,000 and below category" than the State totals. In 2004, that percentage was about equal. The percentage of filers in the over $250,000 has remained consistenly above the State's percentage (approximately .2% more than the State average).

Adjusted Gross (as calculated on Federal Income Tax return): Income (including wages, interest, capital gains, income from retirement accounts, alimony paid to you) adjusted downward by specific deductions (including contributions to deductible retirement accounts, alimony paid by you); but not including standard and itemized deductions.
